Schulz Speyer Marks 70 Years of Library Innovation

Since 1955, Schulz Speyer has been a pioneer in library design. Founders Erna and Hans Richard Schulz laid the groundwork for what is today one of Germany’s leading companies in library environments – built on a philosophy that always puts people at the center.

From the early years in Nördlingen, where the company first furnished cinemas and lecture halls, to today’s modern libraries across the globe, Schulz Speyer has combined functionality, flexibility, and aesthetic value. Hans Richard Schulz, known as the “Bibliothekspapst” (“Pope of Libraries”), shaped the development of library furniture in Germany for decades – and many of his innovations are still in use today.

Every library is unique and developed in close collaboration with local communities, architects, and library professionals. The results are inspiring environments where learning, social interaction, and community come together. Notable projects include the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, the University of Luxembourg, and the Darmstadt University and State Library.

As part of the Lammhults Design Group, Schulz Speyer now has an international presence with partners and sister companies in several European countries, as well as worldwide exports. The company’s product portfolio includes the flexible Uniflex shelving system, the ergonomic Inform counter, and the durable Crossrunner book trolley, complemented by high-quality design furniture from the Lammhults Design Group’s Office Interiors brands and leading European partners.

With 70 years behind it, Schulz Speyer looks ahead to the future of libraries, where sustainability, mental well-being, and biophilic design play an increasingly important role. The team behind the brand continues to drive innovation with the same dedication – seeing every new project as an opportunity to create libraries that are both inclusive and inspiring.
